Director of Academic Programs

The Center for Coastal Margin Observation & Prediction (CMOP), a multi-institutional NSF Science and Technology Center hosted at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), seeks a Director of Academic Programs to join the center’s multi-institutional team.

The Director of Academic Programs will be a central part of a team that shapes the long-term, sustainable vision and strategy for CMOP, where leading-edge coastal margin research serves as a catalyst for education, knowledge transfer and broadening participation. The primary responsibility of this position is to develop and oversee an innovative graduate program in the ocean, environmental and biomolecular sciences, directed at a next generation of professionals addressing ocean, environmental and public health issues. The program will be offered through the OHSU Institute of Environmental Health (IEH), in partnership with IEH's Division of Environmental and Biomolecular Systems (EBS). Building on existing EBS graduate degree programs, this position will advance the educational offerings to foster a highly interdisciplinary training providing students with the skills to understand and solve complex challenges through integrative studies across multiple scales, from molecular to global.

Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Engage appropriate instructors to supplement teaching needs for the graduate education program.
  • Obtain sponsored funding for the long-term sustainability of all CMOP education programs.
  • Facilitate the translation of CMOP research into a variety of educational opportunities.
  • Oversee the re-scoping and management of the K-12 outreach education program.
  • Serve on the CMOP Senior Management Team.
  • Represent IEH’s educational programs at meetings and conferences as appropriate.

Qualifications must include:

  • Requires a Ph.D. in a relevant science discipline; or a Ph.D./Ed.D. in education, with a BS or MS in a related science discipline.
  • Experience successfully developing and managing graduate classes and/or curriculum in an academic environment, including experience translating applied research into educational materials and lessons.
  • Successful track record of securing and managing sponsored funding.
  • Ability and experience working collaboratively in leadership team settings.
  • Experience integrating the needs of diverse populations in educational programs in pursuit of broadening participation in STEM education. Experience working closely with Native American populations, particularly regarding education and science, is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of curriculum development.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regionally and nationally, on both day and overnight trips.
